Sokoto Prison Warder’s Comment That: “Nnamdi Kanu Is the Wisest Man I’ve Ever Met” Sparks New Debate on His Detention

SOKOTO, Nigeria — Fresh controversy has erupted over the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, following a startling revelation allegedly made by a prison guard in Sokoto, where Kanu is currently being held.
Kanu has remained in detention since the controversial ruling of the Federal High Court in Abuja, led by Justice Omotosho, which transferred him to Sokoto Prison pending further judicial proceedings. His continued imprisonment has triggered intense public debate, with commentators questioning both the legal process and the treatment of the separatist leader.
However, the conversation took a surprising turn after an unnamed Hausa prison warder allegedly broke ranks to speak passionately about his interaction with the IPOB leader.
“Nnamdi Kanu carries a divine level of wisdom” — Prison guard
The guard claimed that meeting Nnamdi Kanu has completely changed his perception of the man and the circumstances surrounding his incarceration.
“I am a prison guard in Sokoto Prison, and I can tell you for free that Nnamdi Kanu is the wisest man I have ever met in my entire life. He carries a kind of wisdom that feels divine — the wisdom of Allah Himself, and he does not deserve to be here,” the warder reportedly said.
He went further to describe his conversations with the IPOB leader as transformational:
“Every time I speak with him, I feel like I am speaking with a man far ahead of this generation. This is not a criminal; this is a leader. Nigeria is holding the wrong man in prison.”
FFK once made similar remarks
The revelation has reminded many of comments made in 2016 by Femi Fani-Kayode (FFK), who also described Nnamdi Kanu as “a profound intellectual and strategic thinker” after both men encountered each other in detention at the time.
New wave of reactions
The warder’s alleged confession has set off another wave of reactions across social media and political circles. Supporters argue that the statement reinforces their belief that Kanu is a political detainee rather than a criminal, while others insist that the rule of law must be allowed to take its course regardless of public sentiment.
Human rights advocates and southeastern sociopolitical groups have renewed calls for his release or at least a more transparent judicial process.
What lies ahead?
As the clock ticks, analysts say Nnamdi Kanu’s continued imprisonment is shaping into one of the most emotionally charged issues in Nigeria’s political landscape. With the 2027 elections drawing closer, many believe decisions surrounding Kanu may have significant national implications.
