Who Founded APGA? Clearing the Confusion Around Nigeria’s All Progressives Grand Alliance
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) remains one of Nigeria’s most influential regional political parties, particularly in the South-East. However, over the years, there has been persistent confusion about who actually founded the party.
The Founder of APGA
APGA was founded in 2002 by Chief Chekwas Okorie, a politician and political strategist from Imo State. He also served as the party’s first National Chairman and was instrumental in securing its registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Chief Okorie conceived APGA as a progressive platform to challenge the dominance of the major political parties at the time and to give greater political voice to marginalized groups, especially in the South-East.
Was Ojukwu the Founder of APGA?
No.
While Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the late Biafran leader, became the most iconic face of APGA, he did not found the party.
Ojukwu joined APGA after its formation and later contested Nigeria’s presidential election under the party’s platform. His stature and historical influence helped popularise APGA nationwide, which is why many Nigerians mistakenly believe he was the founder.
Chief Chekwas Okorie himself has repeatedly clarified this point in public statements and interviews.
APGA’s Early Political Journey
Founded: 2002
INEC registration: 2002
First major national breakthrough: 2003 general elections
Stronghold: South-East Nigeria
APGA later achieved significant electoral success, especially in Anambra State, where it governed for multiple terms and established itself as a dominant regional force.
Why the Confusion Persists
The confusion surrounding APGA’s founder stems largely from:
Ojukwu’s symbolic leadership role
His presidential candidacy
His deep historical connection with the South-East political identity
Despite this, historical records and party documentation clearly credit Chief Chekwas Okorie as APGA’s founder. In summary:
Founder of APGA: Chief Chekwas Okorie
Not the founder: Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (though a key figure)
Understanding the correct history of political parties is essential, especially in a time when misinformation often shapes public opinion.
