Letter to Donald Trump Over Peter Obi’s Security Concerns Leaks
A letter addressed to U.S. President Donald Trump over the security of opposition leader Peter Obi has leaked to the press, adding an international dimension to the controversy surrounding the recent attack in Benin City.
The letter, dated February 27, 2026, was written by U.S.-based Nigerian politician and former presidential aspirant SKC Ogbonnia, who urged Trump to hold President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accountable for what he described as a deteriorating security climate for opposition figures in Nigeria.
The Benin City Incident
Ogbonnia referenced the February 24 incident in Benin City, where gunmen reportedly trailed Obi’s convoy after a political engagement and opened fire. Obi was not injured, but vehicles were said to have been damaged at the residence of his host, former Edo State Governor John Odigie-Oyegun.
The attack has since sparked debate over political tolerance and security in Nigeria’s democratic space.
Ogbonnia’s Allegations
In the letter, Ogbonnia argued that the incident reflects a broader pattern of hostility toward opposition voices.
He criticised what he described as the federal government’s muted response, suggesting that the absence of a swift and forceful public condemnation raises concerns.
According to him, as chief security officer of the nation, President Tinubu bears ultimate responsibility for ensuring the safety of all political actors — including rivals.
The Houston-based academic also linked the incident to comments allegedly made by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, which he characterised as hostile toward Obi.
Claims of Systemic Intimidation
Ogbonnia further claimed that the attack was not isolated but part of a broader climate of political intimidation. He cited activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore as one of several opposition figures who have publicly complained of harassment or detention.
He also raised concerns about alleged ethnic tensions, arguing that supporters of Obi — particularly in Igbo-dominated communities — have faced intimidation during previous electoral cycles.
Appeal to International Community
Appealing directly to Trump’s global political profile, Ogbonnia urged him to use his influence to draw international scrutiny to Nigeria’s political climate.
The letter’s emergence has intensified discussion about security, political pluralism, and democratic resilience in Africa’s most populous nation.
As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency has not issued a formal response to the specific claims contained in the leaked correspondence.
Why This Story Matters
It internationalises Nigeria’s domestic political tensions.
It raises questions about security guarantees for opposition leaders.
It may influence diplomatic discourse if formally acknowledged by U.S. officials.
For now, the leaked letter adds another layer to the unfolding debate over political safety and accountability ahead of future electoral cycles.
