Plateau Insecurity: “Communities Must Take Responsibility” – Governor Mutfwang Speaks After Angwan Rukuba Attack
Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has called on communities to take greater responsibility for their own security, following the recent deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos.
Speaking during an interview on Wednesday during Arise TV News Night anchored by Ngozi Alaegbu and monitored by headlineswave.ng, the governor stressed that security cannot be left to government forces alone.
Security Is Everyone’s Business
Governor Mutfwang revealed that the Angwan Rukuba community lacked basic local security structures, which made it vulnerable to attack.
According to him, the community had:
No vigilante group
No information-sharing platform
No basic early warning or defense system
He emphasized that modern security goes beyond weapons and military presence.
Security is not only about arms and ammunition. The boots cannot go round. Communities must be able to see something and say something, he said.
Criticism Over Armoured Movement Dismissed
Addressing criticism over his visit to the attack scene in an armoured vehicle, Mutfwang dismissed the backlash as misplaced.
He explained that security operatives advised precautionary measures for his safety, adding that some narratives circulating online were taken out of context.
“It’s the handiwork of social media and armchair critics. The security personnel felt it was necessary,” he noted.
Tinubu Commended for Support
The governor also expressed appreciation to Bola Tinubu for his visit to Jos and efforts to support Plateau State, particularly in deploying technology-driven security solutions.
Airport Lighting Issue Not Embarrassing
On concerns raised by the President about the lack of runway lighting at the Jos airport, Mutfwang clarified that the facility indeed lacks proper lighting infrastructure.
He disclosed that the state government is already in discussions with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria to resolve the issue.
Support for Victims Beyond Financial Aid
Governor Mutfwang assured victims of the attack that the government would provide holistic support, including:
Emotional and psychological care
Medical assistance
Social support systems
Continuous visitations
He stressed that financial compensation alone is not sufficient to address the trauma suffered by victims.
