Jonathan Ready to Run Again, Close Ally Confirms

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan may be preparing for a political comeback ahead of the 2027 presidential election, according to a close ally who spoke on the unfolding political consultations.

The ally revealed that there are growing efforts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and among influential political stakeholders to persuade Jonathan to contest the presidency again as Nigeria approaches the next general election.

PDP Leaders Reportedly Wooing Jonathan
According to sources familiar with the development, senior figures within the PDP have been encouraging Jonathan to return to active politics and lead the party into the 2027 presidential race.

A senior party official disclosed that discussions about drafting the former president into the race have advanced significantly, with several stakeholders believing Jonathan’s previous administration provided relative economic stability and national cohesion.

The source also noted that the former president has reportedly been consulting with key political leaders across the country as part of the ongoing deliberations.

Strategic Calculations Ahead of 2027
Political analysts believe Jonathan’s possible return could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 election.

Some northern political actors are said to be open to the idea, partly because Jonathan—if elected—could only serve one four-year term, potentially allowing power to rotate back to the North in 2031

Within the PDP, some officials have even suggested the possibility of granting Jonathan an automatic ticket should he agree to run.

Legal Debate Over Jonathan’s Eligibility

Jonathan’s potential candidacy has also revived debates about the constitutional limits on presidential tenure.

The Fourth Alteration to the 1999 Constitution, signed into law in 2018, introduced provisions restricting individuals who complete another person’s term from serving more than one additional term.

However, legal experts remain divided on whether the amendment applies to Jonathan, who first assumed office in 2010 after the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and later won the 2011 presidential election.

Some lawyers argue that the law cannot be applied retroactively, meaning Jonathan could still legally contest future elections.
Jonathan Yet to Make Official Declaration

Despite the growing speculation, the former president has not publicly confirmed any intention to run in the 2027 presidential election.

Sources say he is still consulting widely and considering several conditions before making any final decision.

If Jonathan eventually declares his candidacy, analysts believe it could significantly alter the dynamics of Nigeria’s next presidential contest.
