2027: Jonathan’s Presidential Ambition Gains Steam as Mimiko Leads South-West Consultations

The 2027 presidential ambition of former President Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly gaining momentum as former Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has been appointed to head Jonathan’s consultation team in the South-West region.
Jonathan, who first became Nigeria’s president in 2010 following the death of his boss, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, later won election in 2011 but lost his re-election bid to the late Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.
Although the former president has not publicly declared his interest in the 2027 race, sources close to him confirmed that discreet consultations are already underway across the country.
“The former President does not want to hastily declare his intention. He is still weighing his chances and will only throw his hat in the ring when he is convinced the odds favour him,” a source familiar with the development told Headlineswave.ng.
PDP, ADC Leaders Woo Jonathan
Findings revealed that some influential figures in both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have been reaching out to Jonathan, urging him to consider running on their respective party platforms.
Recently, Jonathan reportedly held a closed-door meeting with the ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, where discussions allegedly centered on his possible return to the presidential race.
According to insiders, a faction of the ADC is pushing for the party’s 2027 presidential ticket to be zoned to the South, to enable the region to complete an eight-year tenure before power shifts to the North.
Aregbesola, Others Back Southern Presidency
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s estranged ally, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, is said to be one of the leading figures in the ADC camp supporting the idea. Sources revealed that Aregbesola even recommended Mimiko to Jonathan to coordinate his consultations in the South-West, given Aregbesola’s current commitments in the ADC National Executive Committee.
Mimiko’s Task and Political Journey
Dr. Mimiko, who once served as Jonathan’s South-West campaign coordinator in 2015, has maintained a long-standing political relationship with the former president.
In 2012, Jonathan was accused by the Ondo State PDP of secretly supporting Mimiko’s re-election under the Labour Party (LP). When Mimiko later joined the PDP in 2014, he became a key figure in Jonathan’s re-election efforts.
After leaving office, Mimiko contested the Ondo Central Senatorial seat under the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in 2019 but lost. Ahead of the 2023 elections, he rejoined the PDP and aligned with the faction loyal to Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Following the 2023 polls, several of Mimiko’s allies defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), although the former governor himself remained politically quiet amid reports that some powerful interests within the presidency blocked his entry into the APC.
Why It Matters
Mimiko’s latest role as Jonathan’s South-West frontman signals that the former president’s return to active politics may be closer than many expected.
