In the ever-volatile political terrain of Nigeria, Plateau State finds itself at the center of an unfolding drama — one that pits loyalty, power, and ambition against each other. Governor Caleb Mutfwang, elected under the banner of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), is reportedly facing increasing pressure and manipulation to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party at the national level.
APC’s Open Invitation — And Internal Dissent
The APC has not been quiet about its admiration for Governor Mutfwang’s leadership. His efforts in restoring peace, infrastructure development, and economic initiatives in Plateau have earned him praise across party lines. This prompted a formal call from the North Central APC Forum, inviting the governor to consider crossing over.
Yet, this move hasn’t gone down well with everyone in the APC. A faction known as the Plateau State APC Vanguard has strongly opposed the governor’s possible defection, calling it a “threat to the party’s integrity and structure.” According to them, accepting a sitting PDP governor into their fold could undermine the internal rebuilding process currently underway within the APC.

Mutfwang Reacts: “I’m Not Defecting”
Governor Mutfwang has responded with firmness and clarity, dismissing all defection rumors as the handiwork of political mischief-makers. In various statements, his media aides have branded the speculation as “deliberate misinformation designed to fracture the PDP’s unity in Plateau.”
He further condemned the circulation of doctored images showing him allegedly aligning with APC chieftains, calling it a “new low in political propaganda.” “I remain loyal to the PDP and to the people of Plateau who gave me their mandate,” Mutfwang stated recently, adding that his focus remains on governance, not party-switching.
The Stakes: 2027 and Beyond
As Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general elections, power blocs across the country are already strategizing. In Plateau State, the high-stakes battle between the PDP and APC has intensified, with Mutfwang emerging as a central figure.
Supporters of the PDP are rallying behind the governor, praising his unwavering stance and citing his performance as evidence of PDP’s capacity for good governance. Meanwhile, sections of the APC are actively trying to pull him into their camp, seeing him as a valuable asset ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Governor Mutfwang’s name has become a political magnet in Plateau — for both loyalty and opposition. While the APC dangles the carrot, hoping to claim a major political trophy, the PDP fights to keep its house intact. The outcome of this silent war could significantly shape the political climate in Plateau and influence national alignments a
