Tinubu’s Top Aide Quits in Protest, Tags Alliance With Wike ‘Unholy’
In a stunning political development, Aliyu Audu, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Public Affairs, has tendered his resignation, citing ethical concerns and warning against what he describes as an “unholy alliance” between the Presidency and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Audu’s resignation letter, addressed to Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, was dated June 8, 2025, and has since gone viral across political and media circles. “I refuse to be used directly or indirectly as an instrument to reduce Nigeria to a one-party state,” Audu wrote. “That would be a betrayal of both divine favour and democratic principle.”
The former aide, known for his articulate defense of the administration’s policies in the past, voiced growing discomfort over political developments within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)—particularly the increasing consolidation of power and what he called an effort to weaken the political opposition through backdoor alliances.
While Audu commended President Tinubu’s economic reforms, he warned that the current trajectory of party politics was placing Nigeria’s hard-won democracy at risk. “Democracy thrives on competition of ideas, not conspiracy of convenience,” he added, in what political observers believe was a veiled jab at Wike’s controversial defection and influence within the Tinubu-led administration.
The resignation has sent shockwaves through both APC and opposition ranks, with many wondering if this signals a deeper crack within the party leadership.
As of press time, there has been no official response from the Presidency or the office of Minister Nyesom Wike.
