Shock in Nasarawa as newborn found abandoned in bush

…As Police arrest mother
The quiet town of Akwanga was thrown into distress this week after residents discovered a newborn baby abandoned in a bush near a primary school on AA Koto Street.
The infant, wrapped in cloth, was found alive by passers-by, sparking a wave of shock and outrage across the community.
“It’s a terrible thing to happen,” one resident said. “We are all shaken by this. How could anyone do this to an innocent child?”
Police were swiftly alerted and began an investigation. The Nasarawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the arrest of the baby’s mother, a final-year student at the College of Education, Akwanga.
The case has since been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia for further action.
The disturbing discovery comes as Nigeria grapples with a string of child abandonment cases. Only months ago, a farmer in Kebbi State rescued a newborn girl who had been buried alive, reigniting debate over maternal support and social welfare in rural communities.
While the community awaits justice, much of the focus remains on the well-being of the infant, with residents hoping the child receives proper care and the chance of a healthy future.
