Headlineswave.ng | August 17, 2025
Nigeria’s political map shifted slightly on Saturday as voters in 13 states headed to the polls for by-elections into federal and state constituencies. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted elections across 16 constituencies, with results producing a mix of victories, defeats, and inconclusive contests.
From Zamfara in the North-West to Anambra in the South-East, Kaduna in the North-Central, Ondo in the South-West and beyond, here are the latest verified updates:
Anambra: APGA Sweeps Senate and Assembly Seats
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) strengthened its grip on Anambra politics.
Senatorial – Anambra South: Emmanuel Nwachukwu (APGA) polled 90,408 votes to defeat APC’s Azuka Okwuosa (19,847 votes) and ADC’s Donald Amangbo (2,889 votes).
Onitsha North 1 Assembly Seat: Iféoma Azikiwe (APGA) won with 7,774 votes, ahead of ADC’s Justina Azuka (1,909), APC’s Ezennia Ojekwe (1,371), and YPP’s Njideka Ndiwe (655).
Kano: APC and NNPP Share Victories amid Controversy
Kano saw a fierce duel between APC and NNPP:
Ghari/Tsanyawa Constituency: APC’s Garba Gwarmai secured 31,472 votes to defeat NNPP’s Yusuf Maigado (27,931 votes).
Bagwai/Shanono Constituency: NNPP’s Ali Alhassan won convincingly with 16,198 votes, leaving APC trailing with 5,347 votes.
The APC has, however, rejected the outcomes and called for cancellation, citing “widespread violence and thuggery.”
Zamfara: Election Declared Inconclusive
INEC declared the Kaura-Namoda South Assembly election inconclusive, citing over-voting, ballot snatching, and disruptions across several polling units. A fresh date will be announced for the supplementary election.
Oyo: PDP Claims Victory in Ibadan North
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recorded victory in the Ibadan North Federal Constituency.
Fola Oyekunle (PDP): 18,404 votes
Adewale Olatunji (APC): 8,312 votes
Observers described the process as peaceful, though voter turnout was noticeably low.
Kaduna, Ondo, Ogun, Jigawa, Taraba and Others
In Kaduna (Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency), voting was keenly contested, though final figures are still being collated at the time of reporting.
Ondo State witnessed relatively peaceful polls under tight security, with results expected later today.
Ogun (Remo Federal Constituency), Jigawa (Garki/Babura), and Taraba (Karim Lamido State Constituency) also participated in Saturday’s exercise, though official declarations from INEC are still pending in some constituencies.
The Big Picture
The results underline the country’s diverse political battlegrounds:
APGA consolidates in Anambra.
APC and NNPP continue their bitter rivalry in Kano.
PDP maintains its ground in Oyo.
Zamfara remains on hold pending INEC’s supplementary polls.
Analysts say the outcomes reflect shifting alliances and may foreshadow strategies ahead of the next general elections.
