Four people have been confirmed dead following a fatal crash involving a Toyota Highlander on the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway near the Mabushi underbridge in Abuja.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command disclosed the details on Thursday through its spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, who issued a formal statement recounting the events that led to the tragedy.

According to the statement, the incident began when the grey Toyota Highlander, bearing registration number ABJ 206 EC and driven by Emeka Ehekweme with his wife as a passenger, was intercepted by three suspected miscreants commonly referred to as agberos near Berger Junction in Utako.

The suspects reportedly forced their way into the moving vehicle, sparking a violent altercation over control of the steering wheel. In the course of the struggle, the SUV veered off its path, collided with a parked Mazda vehicle, and then overturned, crashing into the pillar of a nearby bridge.

Ehekweme, his wife, and two of the alleged attackers were pronounced dead upon arrival at the National Hospital. A third suspect survived the crash and is currently undergoing medical treatment. The driver of the parked Mazda, identified as Suleman Mohammed, escaped with minor injuries and is not believed to be in critical condition.

Adeh confirmed that a full investigation has been launched to determine the precise sequence of events and the identity of the suspects involved. She said the Command remains committed to uncovering all relevant details and will provide updates as enquiries progress.

The police are calling on motorists to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activity, underlining the serious risks posed by violent encounters on the road within the Federal Capital Territory.
