Rivers on Edge: Fubara’s Supporters Disperse as Governor’s Whereabouts Remain Unknown

Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s triumphant return have been dashed.

For hours, thousands of loyalists thronged the Government House, Port Harcourt — waiting since dawn to welcome their governor and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, back to office after six months of suspension. Political bigwigs, ex-local government chairmen, and die-hard supporters stood under the scorching sun, confident of his appearance.

But as the day wore on, the atmosphere shifted. Whispers spread. Faces fell. Supporters slowly began to disperse — because their governor never showed up.

President Bola Tinubu had on Wednesday lifted the emergency rule that kept Fubara and his deputy out of power, directing them and the Rivers State Assembly to resume duties immediately. Lawmakers wasted no time, holding plenary within 24 hours. Yet, the governor’s seat remains empty.
