The Plateau State Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) has carried out a two-day sanitation and roadside clearing exercise across major routes in Jos, aimed at improving environmental safety and accessibility within the state capital.

The exercise, which took place yesterday and today, involved about 300 workers drawn from communities across the state, working alongside PEPSA’s internal sanitation personnel. The operation focused on areas where overgrown shrubs, bushes, and debris had obstructed roads and posed safety risks to motorists and pedestrians.

The locations covered during the exercise included Polo to Hill Station Roundabout; Old Airport; Secretariat to Airforce Base–Yingi Road down to Rayfield; Rayfield Resort to Gut-Dwoi Road; Murtala Way; and Millionaires Quarters Road to Lamingo Road. According to the agency, the exercise will be extended to other parts of the state.

Activities undertaken by the sanitation teams included clearing blocked drainages, trimming overgrown vegetation, and tidying roadside spaces. PEPSA officials monitored the process to ensure coordinated and uninterrupted operations across all designated routes.

Speaking on behalf of the Director General of PEPSA, Samuel Dapiya, the Director of Waste Management, Mrs. Naomi Longlam, called on residents and business owners along the affected routes to take responsibility for maintaining cleanliness.

“We encourage everyone to trim shrubs, remove debris, and support this effort. Keeping Plateau clean is a collective responsibility that requires the participation of all,” she said.

PEPSA noted that the exercise will help prevent bushfires and pest breeding, improve road visibility, and promote a cleaner and healthier environment for residents. The agency reiterated its commitment to sustaining environmental sanitation initiatives in collaboration with communities across the state.
