Experts Explain Unusual Multiple Sun Appearance Spotted Over Jos on Tuesday
Watch video below
Residents of Jos, Plateau State, were on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, left intrigued after an unusual visual pattern appeared around the sun, giving the impression of multiple rays forming a circular halo across the sky.
The rare-looking sight, which was captured on video around Old Airport Junction, Jos, quickly gained attention on social media, sparking widespread curiosity and speculation among residents.
However, experts have clarified that the phenomenon is a natural atmospheric occurrence known scientifically as a sun halo.
According to atmospheric scientists, the effect occurs when sunlight is refracted and reflected through tiny ice crystals suspended in high-altitude cirrus clouds, creating a ring-like glow and radiating light patterns around the sun.
Such sun halos are well documented worldwide and are often more visible in high-altitude regions like Jos due to favorable atmospheric conditions in the upper layers of the atmosphere.
Experts further assured the public that:
The phenomenon is natural and harmless
It poses no threat to life, property, or public safety
It is not a spiritual sign or omen
No emergency response is required
In some cases, sun halos may simply precede a change in weather conditions, such as rainfall.
Residents have been advised to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified claims or misinformation, and refrain from staring directly at the sun to prevent eye strain or discomfort.
The clarification has helped ease public concerns, as the unusual sun appearance has now been linked to normal atmospheric processes rather than any extraordinary event.
