A former federal lawmaker and member of the North East Development Commission’s Governing Board, Sam Onuigbo, has noted that climate change affects food production.

He said this in turn has a big impact on inciting insecurity, adding that universities in the country are very important in making sure the country has enough food, to reduce the negative effect of climate change.

The former lawmaker said this while reacting to the apppoint of first ever female Vice Chancellor of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture as former Vice Chancellor, Prof Maduebibisi Iwe, bows out on March 1, 2026.

Prof Maduebibisi would be replaced by Prof. Ursula Akanwa as the new Vice Chancellor of the school.

The former two-term federal lawmaker urged the incoming Vice Chancellor to prepare well and implement projects that would show the confidence the Governing Council and Selection Committee of the university have placed in her.

Onuigbo, who helped create Nigeria’s major law on climate change, the Climate Change Act 2021, hopes that having a woman and a mother as Vice Chancellor of MOUAU, will help the university build good relations with the local community in Umudike.

“I’m excited about a partnership that benefits both sides and helps MOUAU become the top university for higher learning in Nigeria,” he added.
