ADC Responds to Attack on Its Leaders, Moves to Approach ECOWAS Court

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly condemned what it described as a gun attack and attempted assassination targeting some of its prominent leaders in Edo State.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party said the alleged attack was directed at former Edo State Governor John Oyegun, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and former Labour Party governorship candidate Olumide Akpata, who recently joined the ADC.

The statement, signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, described the incident as a deliberate act of political intimidation rather than a random security breach.

ADC Alleges Pattern of Political Intimidation

According to the party, the attack forms part of what it termed a “wider pattern of hostility” against opposition figures across the country.

The ADC accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of fostering a climate that enables political violence. It stressed that the use of gunfire or threats against political opponents is unacceptable in a democratic system.

The party further alleged that prior remarks attributed to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo had heightened tensions.
ADC claimed the governor had suggested he could not guarantee the safety of Peter Obi if he visited the state and had accused the opposition party of sponsoring cult groups — allegations the ADC described as reckless and inflammatory.

Party Plans to Approach ECOWAS Court

In a significant move, the ADC announced plans to escalate the matter beyond Nigeria’s borders.

The party revealed that it is compiling documented cases of what it described as acts of political persecution and intends to submit reports to diplomatic missions and the ECOWAS Court of Justice.

Part of the statement reads:
“We are compiling all cases of acts of terrorism against our party. We shall soon make our reports available to diplomatic missions as well as the ECOWAS Court of Human Rights.”

The party maintained that it would pursue only lawful and constitutional means to protect its members and defend democratic values.

ADC Urges Calm Among Supporters
Despite the tension, the ADC called on its members nationwide to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding.

It reaffirmed that no individual or political party owns any Nigerian state and emphasized that all citizens retain the constitutional right to free movement, political association, and participation without fear.

“Let no one be left in doubt: regardless of the level of intimidation, ADC will not bow to terror,” the statement added.

Political Implications

The incident has further intensified political tensions in Edo State ahead of future electoral activities. It also adds to growing debates about political safety, opposition rights, and democratic tolerance in Nigeria.

As investigations continue, political observers will be watching closely to see whether security agencies provide clarity on the alleged attack and whether the ADC proceeds with its legal action at the regional level.
