Three people, including a toddler, were killed on Friday at the Toll-Gate area of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway after an articulated truck lost control and rammed into waiting commuters.

Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, TRACE, confirmed the incident, which occurred around 2:00 pm.

He said six others sustained injuries of varying severity in the accident that involved a total of 15 people.

Eyewitnesses reported that the white Howo Sino truck, bearing registration number T4995LA, suffered brake failure, causing it to collide with multiple vehicles and individuals at a bus stop.

Other vehicles involved included two yellow commercial buses (SMK 199YK and AGL 394YA), an LT commercial bus (FKJ 360YH), and two Suzuki yellow buses (98YL and KSF 23YA).

“The truck reportedly failed to stop, crushing commuters who were attempting to board a bus and damaging several vehicles along its path,” Akinbiyi stated.

According to the TRACE spokesperson, three people lost their lives in the crash, while six others sustained injuries.

“Fifteen people were involved overall; six commuters were injured, and sadly, three, two adults and a toddler, died at the scene,” he said.

Akinbiyi extended condolences to the families of the victims and urged operators of articulated vehicles to maintain their vehicles regularly to prevent similar tragedies.

“Drivers of articulated trucks must ensure their vehicles are properly serviced before embarking on journeys to avoid such incidents. Traders displaying goods on walkways or road verges should remove them to minimize hazards to commuters,” he advised.
