Nine Senators Dump PDP, LP, APGA, Defect to ADC

Abuja, Nigeria — In a development that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, no fewer than nine serving senators have formally defected from their respective political parties to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Headlineswave.ng gathered that the senators notified the Senate leadership of their decision to leave their former parties during proceedings at the National Assembly.

The lawmakers defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), citing various political reasons and internal party disagreements.

Senators Who Defected to ADC

The senators who joined the ADC include:
Victor Umeh – moved from the Labour Party (LP)
Tony Nwoye – moved from the Labour Party (LP)
Ireti Kingibe – moved from the Labour Party (LP)

Five senators left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ADC:
Aminu Waziri Tambuwal
Binos Yaroe
Lawal Adamu Usman
Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo
Augustine Akobundu

Also joining the ADC is:
Enyinnaya Abaribe, the only senator elected under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) platform.
Senate Queries Abaribe’s Defection

However, the Senate has reportedly asked Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe to reconsider his defection within one week.

According to parliamentary rules and constitutional provisions governing political defections, the reason provided by Abaribe—that he was sacked by his party—may not satisfy the constitutional requirement that allows lawmakers to switch parties.

Political analysts say the defection of the nine senators could signal growing political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections, with smaller parties attempting to build stronger coalitions against the dominant political blocs.

Observers also believe the development may strengthen the African Democratic Congress, which has recently attracted interest from several opposition figures seeking an alternative platform.

More details are expected to emerge as the Senate leadership and the affected political parties respond officially to the development.
