Dino Melaye, Lauretta Onochie React as Crowd Disrupts City Boys Empowerment Programme in Owerri
Former Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, has reacted to the disorder that erupted during a City Boys Movement empowerment programme in Owerri, Imo State, where a large crowd reportedly disrupted the event and carted away several items meant for distribution.
Eyewitness accounts and videos circulating on social media showed groups of youths rushing into the venue while empowerment materials were being distributed.
The sudden surge created confusion as several items prepared for beneficiaries were allegedly taken during the commotion.
Reacting to the development on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Melaye criticised the incident, describing the crowd as “village boys” who overran the programme venue.
The former lawmaker suggested that the disruption reflected poorly on the organisers of the event and questioned the level of order and planning around the empowerment exercise.
Meanwhile, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress and former presidential aide, Lauretta Onochie, also reacted to the incident through her official X handle.
Onochie shared a video of the chaotic scene and offered her explanation for the actions of those who stormed the venue.
According to her, the large crowd captured in the footage consisted mainly of supporters of former Anambra State governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The situation reportedly left many observers stunned as the crowd surged into the campaign ground in Owerri, forcing organisers to struggle to maintain control of the programme.
As of the time of filing this report, the organisers of the City Boys Movement empowerment event have not issued an official statement addressing the disruption.
The incident has continued to generate debate on social media, with supporters and critics of different political camps trading blame over what transpired at the event.
