INEC Crisis Deepens: Allegations of Duress Rock ADC Leadership Decision Ahead of 2027 Elections

Fresh controversy has erupted around Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following serious allegations that its Chairman, Joash Amupitan, may have acted under pressure in issuing a recent decision affecting the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

INEC Moves to Derecognize ADC Leadership

According to reports by headlineswave.ng  INEC announced plans to remove the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as leaders of the ADC.

David Mark currently serves as National Chairman while Rauf Aregbesola holds the position of National Secretary

The Commission cited an ongoing legal dispute over the party’s leadership as the basis for its decision. It also stated that it would suspend recognition of any faction within the ADC until the matter is resolved in court.

The directive was contained in a statement issued by National Commissioner, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, referencing “preservatory orders” from the Court of Appeal in a case involving David Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe.

Explosive Allegations of Political Pressure

However, the situation took a dramatic turn after respected legal scholar and human rights advocate, Chidi Odinkalu, made startling claims on social media.
Odinkalu alleged that INEC’s controversial decision followed intense high-level meetings involving, senior INEC officials, the Presidency, the Court of Appeal, and the Federal High Court

According to him, these engagements took place within a 60-hour window preceding the announcement.

Pre-Signed Resignation Letter Claim

In what has become the most controversial aspect of the unfolding crisis, Odinkalu claimed that INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan allegedly signed a resignation letter before his appointment, which is now being used as leverage.

He described this as a “magic threat” used by powerful interests to compel the Chairman into issuing the Commission’s latest interpretation of the court ruling.

Legal Concerns Over INEC’s Role

Odinkalu further questioned the legality of INEC’s action, arguing that INEC does not have the authority to interpret Court of Appeal judgments but the proper procedure would have been to seek clarification from the court

He stressed that a body acting in good faith would avoid making independent interpretations of judicial decisions, especially in politically sensitive matters.

Implications for Nigeria’s 2027 Elections

These allegations come at a critical time as Nigeria begins early political positioning ahead of the #NigeriaDecides2027 elections.

Odinkalu issued a stark warning:
“The country stares down a barrel,” suggesting that Nigeria’s democratic institutions may be under significant strain.

As the situation unfolds, Nigerians and political observers are increasingly обеспокоены about the credibility of the electoral system and the potential impact on future elections.

While INEC has yet to officially respond to the allegations of duress, the development is expected to trigger legal challenges and increased scrutiny of electoral processes
