ADC Crisis Deepens as Party Releases INEC Affidavit Recognising David Mark-Led NWC

The internal crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) took a dramatic turn on Tuesday after the party released an affidavit it claims was issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on September 12, 2025, affirming the leadership of a National Working Committee (NWC) led by former Senate President, David Mark.

According to the party, the document—shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) platform, ADC Vanguard—clearly confirms that the leadership transition within the party had been concluded and formally recognised by INEC.

The affidavit also reportedly emphasized that internal party affairs fall outside the jurisdiction of judicial interference.
Contradiction Raises Legal, Ethical Concerns

The development comes amid heightened political tension following INEC’s recent refusal to recognise the Mark-led leadership—an action that has triggered strong reactions within the party and among opposition figures.

Citing Clauses 14 to 19 of the affidavit, ADC leaders argued that INEC’s current stance contradicts its earlier position.

“This affidavit clearly shows that INEC had acknowledged and accepted the outcome of our internal processes,” a senior party official stated.

“For the same institution to now turn around and deny that recognition raises serious legal and ethical questions.”

The party described the situation as a troubling inconsistency that could undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.

‘Dangerous Precedent’ for Nigeria’s Democracy

ADC leaders warned that INEC’s alleged reversal sets what they described as a “dangerous precedent” for Nigeria’s democratic system.

“You cannot approbate and reprobate at the same time. INEC cannot validate a leadership structure in 2025 and disown it in 2026 without eroding public trust,” the official added.

Allegations Against APC, INEC Leadership

In a strongly worded statement, the party accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, of attempting to manipulate the electoral body.

“It is now crystal clear that the APC, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the embattled INEC Chairman, Prof. Amupitan are attempting to weaponise INEC to foist a one-party system on Nigeria,” the statement read.

The party further warned that democratic institutions must remain neutral to sustain Nigeria’s multi-party system.

“No democracy survives where institutions meant to be neutral become tools for political suppression. What is happening today is an attempt to silence alternative voices and shrink democratic space.”

Rising Tensions Ahead of Political Realignments

The controversy is expected to intensify political debates as opposition parties continue to reposition ahead of future elections.

Analysts warn that prolonged disputes between political parties and electoral institutions could further strain public trust in Nigeria’s democratic process.

Conclusion

As the ADC-INEC face-off escalates, the affidavit now sits at the centre of a growing legal and political battle that could shape the future of party politics and institutional credibility in Nigeria.
