The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise.

The decision was reached after a high-level meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on Friday, April 10, 2026.

According to the Commission, the exercise will now take place after the 2027 general elections, a move that is expected to spark discussions across Nigeria’s political landscape.

In a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC emphasized the importance of the revalidation process.

He explained that the exercise is designed to verify and update existing voter records, eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries, ensure accuracy of personal data and strengthen the credibility of the National Register of Voters

“The voter revalidation exercise is a critical component of the Commission’s mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date register,” the statement noted.

INEC also stated that the process would give registered voters the opportunity to confirm and correct their personal details when eventually conducted.

Despite the postponement, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to delivering free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections in Nigeria.

What This Means

The delay suggests that Nigeria will head into the 2027 elections using the current voter register framework, raising potential concerns among stakeholders about data accuracy and electoral transparency.
