Nobody Has a Better Plan for the North Than Me — Peter Obi Explains Why He Switched Parties

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared that no politician in Nigeria currently has a more comprehensive plan for Northern Nigeria than he does, as he also addressed questions surrounding his past party switches.

Speaking during an appearance on Prime Time on Arise Television, Obi said his vision for the North is rooted in economic transformation, particularly through agriculture.

“Nobody can do what I intend to do in the North. We will change the North. Our greatest asset as a country is in the North. We can make more money from agriculture than we make from oil,” he stated.

Focus on Northern Economic Revival

The former Anambra State governor described Northern Nigeria as the country’s most valuable but underutilized resource.

According to him, investing in agriculture and rural development would not only boost food security but also significantly increase national revenue.

Obi stressed that Nigeria’s overdependence on oil must be urgently replaced with sustainable sectors, especially agriculture, where the North holds a natural advantage.

Why He Switched Parties

Addressing criticisms over his political journey, Obi maintained that his decisions have never been driven by personal gain or political bargaining.

“I switch parties because I don’t play transactional politics,” he said.

He explained that his moves across political platforms were guided by his commitment to good governance, accountability, and delivering results for Nigerians.

Call for Stronger Opposition

Obi also emphasized the importance of a vibrant opposition in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy. He urged the government to support, rather than suppress, opposition parties.

“The government should protect the opposition. In fact, they should make opposition stronger and make it work,” he added.

According to him, a functional opposition is key to ensuring transparency, accountability, and effective governance.
2027 in View

With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, Obi’s remarks are expected to shape political discourse, particularly in Northern Nigeria, where electoral influence remains significant.

His message combines economic reform with a call for principled politics—positioning himself as a candidate focused on long-term national development.
