The African Democratic Congress (ADC) defied mounting pressure and internal crisis to successfully hold its national convention in Abuja, with about 3,000 delegates participating in the exercise.

Tight Security as Delegates Converge

The convention, held at the Rainbow Event Centre, witnessed a heavy security presence. Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services were stationed at the venue, conducting thorough checks on all attendees.

Security patrol vehicles were also deployed around the area to ensure order and prevent disruptions.

Convention Amid Leadership Crisis

The gathering took place against the backdrop of a deepening leadership crisis within the party, with rival factions laying claim to its control.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier suspended recognition of all factions following ongoing litigation and a court ruling on the dispute.

Last-Minute Attempts to Stop Event

Speaking at the venue, Dino Melaye disclosed that there were deliberate efforts to halt the convention.

According to him:
“As at 11 p.m. last night, the owners of this venue attempted to cancel this programme, but we stood our ground.”

Organisers Push Through Challenges

Despite multiple setbacks, including difficulty securing a venue, the organisers insisted on proceeding with the event.

Kabiru Saje, a member of the New Media Committee, said the convention would either produce a new leadership or reaffirm the existing structure, noting that delegates turned out in large numbers.

A Defining Moment for ADC

The convention represents a crucial moment for the ADC as it attempts to stabilise its leadership and reposition itself politically.

However, with legal battles still ongoing and INEC yet to recognise any faction, the outcome of the convention may continue to generate debate
