The Paramount Ruler of Jos, Da Jacob Buba Gyang, has ordered the suspension of a major cultural festival in Plateau State following worsening insecurity across affected communities.
Festival Cancelled Over Rising Attacks
The decision affects the popular Nzem Berom Festival, an annual cultural event of the Berom people, which was scheduled to hold later this month in Jos.
According to the monarch, the move came after extensive consultations with the Jos Joint Traditional Council, Berom leaders, and other stakeholders, who reviewed the current security situation and deemed it unsafe to proceed.
“Difficult But Necessary” Decision
The Gbong Gwom Jos described the suspension as a painful but necessary step, noting that preparations for the festival were already at an advanced stage before the final decision was taken.
He explained that the worsening wave of violence and recent deadly attacks in parts of Plateau State made it inappropriate to host a celebratory gathering at this time.
Plateau Communities Still Mourning
Reports indicate that several communities across the state have recently suffered attacks resulting in loss of lives and displacement of residents.
The traditional ruler emphasized that the Berom nation is currently in mourning, making it important to show solidarity with affected families rather than proceed with festivities.
Festival Not Cancelled Permanently
Despite the suspension, the monarch reassured that the festival is not cancelled permanently.
A new date will be announced once the security situation improves.
Residents were also urged to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperate with security agencies to restore peace in the state.
