A major political realignment may have begun in Nigeria on Saturday as key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Rotimi Amaechi, converged on Ibadan for a high-stakes National Summit of Opposition Political Party Leaders aimed at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

The summit, hosted by Seyi Makinde and chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, held at the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government House under the theme: “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy.”

Headlineswave.ng gathered that the gathering brought together leaders and stakeholders from the African Democratic Congress, factions of the Peoples Democratic Party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party and other political movements in what many have described as the most formidable opposition coalition talks since the 2023 elections.

Coalition Agrees on Single Candidate Strategy

In a major resolution reached at the summit, the opposition leaders reportedly agreed in principle to support a single presidential candidate for the 2027 election in a move designed to avoid vote splitting and strengthen their chances against the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The coalition also raised concerns over what it described as shrinking democratic space, worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and alleged attempts to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

ADC Raises Alarm Over Alleged Disruption Plot

Earlier before the summit commenced, the ADC alleged that the ruling APC was plotting to disrupt the meeting.

ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, claimed the party uncovered moves to frustrate the event after alleged denial of venues in Abuja and other forms of intimidation.

Despite the alarm, the summit proceeded peacefully under tight security.

Political Implications for 2027

The Ibadan declaration may significantly alter Nigeria’s political calculations heading into 2027.

With Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso and Amaechi in one political conversation, analysts believe the opposition may finally be building the united front many Nigerians have long demanded.

However, internal cracks may still pose a threat, as some factions within the ADC, PDP and even the Accord Party have reportedly distanced themselves from aspects of the summit’s resolutions.

Still, the symbolism of Saturday’s meeting was impossible to ignore: Nigeria’s most influential opposition voices sat under one roof with one mission—to challenge Tinubu and the APC in 2027.

For now, the road to 2027 may have officially begun in Ibadan.
