Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has announced his decision to leave the Labour Party.

He is set to  join the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), in a move that may reshape opposition politics ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Datti made the revelation on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s popular programme, Politics Today.

According to him, his resignation from the Labour Party will officially take effect at midnight on Wednesday.

“I am leaving the Labour Party tomorrow (Wednesday). There is more to it. When there was real peace in the Labour Party, was when they posted back,” Datti said.

He explained that internal disagreements and the party’s departure from its founding ideals influenced his decision.

“They redeployed someone with a specific purpose, and because of the antecedent of the individual to make life difficult, particularly for me. What the Labour Party stood for then is no longer what it is today,” he added.

The outspoken politician confirmed that his next political destination would be PRP, which he described as a party with deep historical roots.

“I am leaving the Labour Party at midnight, and I am joining PRP. PRP is the new destination. PRP is the one with a history. It’s about 75 years old.”

What This Means for 2027

Datti’s exit could further deepen the cracks within the Labour Party, which has been battling internal leadership disputes in recent months.

Political analysts believe the move may weaken Labour Party’s chances in the 2027 elections while strengthening PRP’s profile as a possible alternative platform for opposition figures.

The development comes amid increasing political realignments as key politicians begin to position themselves for the next general election.

Mixed Reactions Trail Datti’s Defection

Nigerians have begun reacting to the news on social media, with some supporters praising his bold move while others see it as a major setback for the Obidient movement and Labour Party faithful.

Observers are now watching to see whether other prominent members of the party will follow suit.
