President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly expressed displeasure over the conduct of the ruling All Progressives Congress legislative primaries across several states, amid growing allegations of candidate imposition, delegate intimidation and irregularities.

According to reports gathered by headlineswave.ng the President was said to have distanced himself from what many party members described as “governors’ excesses” during the controversial APC primaries.

Sources quoted in the report claimed Tinubu spoke after a late-night meeting with South-West APC leaders at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos.

“I am a party constitutional democrat. Yes, I gave governors the privilege to coordinate and take charge of party affairs in their respective states, but I did not ask anyone to impose candidates indiscriminately,” the President was quoted as saying.

The report further claimed the President directed the party’s national leadership to intervene in states where transparent primaries allegedly did not take place.

The disputed primaries reportedly triggered protests and internal disagreements in states including Delta,  Kaduna, Lagos State, Ogun State, Edo State, Ondo State, Imo State, Rivers State, Benue State and Adamawa State.

Meanwhile, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda reportedly warned party members against violence and actions capable of undermining the party’s internal process.

Nigerians React Online

The development sparked mixed reactions from Nigerians on X with some defending the President while others accused him of attempting to shift responsibility.

Several commenters described the APC primaries as chaotic and embarrassing, while others argued that governors merely acted in ways they believed would please the Presidency.

Supporters of the President, however, insisted it would be unfair to blame him directly for disputes arising simultaneously across multiple states.

The controversy adds another layer of tension within the APC as political alignments and calculations ahead of the 2027 elections continue to intensify.
