Former Labour party vice-presidential candidate has dismissed speculations of a falling-out between himself and his former running mate, insisting that their relationship remains cordial despite belonging to different political parties ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Inside Sources programme monitored by Headlineswave.ng on Sunday, Datti said no individual or political interest could create division between him and Obi.
According to him, the mutual respect they built while contesting the 2023 presidential election remains intact.
“Nobody will cause a problem between me and my boss, Peter Obi,” Datti declared during the interview.
The former senator noted that his respect for Obi goes beyond political affiliation, describing him as a former governor with a reputation for prudence and integrity.
“He can be in any party today. I still have respect for him as someone who governed Anambra State and as someone who doesn’t give the ‘shi-shi’.
We have mutual respect for each other, so nobody will come between us,” he said.
The remarks come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, which have seen both men pursue separate political paths.
While Datti has aligned with the People’s Redemption Party, PRP, Obi has moved to the National Democratic Congress, NDC, where he has emerged as the party’s presidential candidate for the forthcoming election.
Political observers had interpreted their differing party choices as a sign of a possible breakdown in relations between the two former allies.
However, Datti’s latest comments appear aimed at dispelling such narratives and reassuring supporters that political differences have not translated into personal hostility.
The former vice-presidential candidate’s statement is likely to resonate with many supporters of the Obidient movement, who have continued to monitor developments surrounding key figures associated with the 2023 Labour Party campaign.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, Datti’s comments suggest that while political strategies may differ, channels of respect and communication between him and Obi remain open.
