EDITORIAL: Secondary School Graduation Ceremony.

The completion of secondary school is meant to be a proud milestone. It is a moment for students, parents, and teachers to celebrate years of hard work, sacrifice, and academic achievement.

However, recent scenes emerging from some secondary school graduation ceremonies across Nigeria have sparked concern and debate.

Videos and photographs circulating on social media show students engaging in behaviour many Nigerians consider inappropriate for such an important educational occasion.

While young people have every right to celebrate their achievements, many observers believe that some celebrations are gradually shifting from expressions of joy to displays that raise questions about discipline, values, and the role of schools and parents in shaping the next generation.

The issue goes beyond fashion, dancing, or youthful excitement. It touches on a bigger question: What is the true purpose of education?

Education is not only about passing examinations and obtaining certificates. It is also about developing character, responsibility, self-respect, and respect for others.

A society that focuses solely on academic success while neglecting moral development risks producing graduates who are educated but not necessarily prepared for responsible adulthood.

Parents, school authorities, religious institutions, and community leaders all have a role to play. Schools should celebrate excellence without compromising standards.

Parents must remain actively involved in the upbringing of their children. Society, too, must provide positive role models for young people.

At the same time, it is important not to condemn an entire generation based on the actions of a few. Thousands of Nigerian students continue to distinguish themselves through hard work, discipline, and exemplary conduct.

Nevertheless, the growing public concern surrounding some graduation ceremonies should serve as a wake-up call.

As a nation, we must ask ourselves whether we are simply producing certificate holders or nurturing responsible citizens.

After all, certificates may open doors, but character determines how far one goes after walking through them.

What do you think? Are some secondary school graduation celebrations crossing the line, or is society overreacting to changing times?
