It looks like Senator Shehu Sani’s comments have sparked controversy. On one hand, he’s criticizing Donald Trump’s immigration policies and pointing out the historical irony of white settlement in America. On the other hand, Nigerians are upset because his advice against traveling abroad for greener pastures seems out of touch with the realities many face at home.
The issue of migration is always sensitive, especially in a country where economic struggles push many to seek opportunities abroad. If Sani’s statement was meant to be patriotic, it seems to have backfired
In his words on his X handle @shehusani
“Trump mass deportation is hypocritical and morally wrong for a nation whose white population were historically ‘undocumented’ immigrants. However, the good side of it is that a strong message is sent to Africans and Latin Americans;learn to stay back and build your country. No matter how much you love their country, they will someday remind you that you don’t belong.”
But Nigerians on X responded to him quickly in what looks like a vitriolic attack.
