Tension, Drama as Anambra APC Holds Controversial Governorship Primaries
The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election held today, April 5, in Anambra State, was marked by tension, confusion, and allegations of irregularities, as party members and aspirants clashed over the credibility of the exercise.
The primaries, organized to elect the party’s flagbearer ahead of the November 2025 Anambra governorship election, were reportedly disrupted in several locations due to poor coordination, delayed arrival of election materials, and accusations of candidate imposition.
Multiple reports from the state indicated that voting did not commence on time, while in some places, it didn’t take place at all. Aspirants and their supporters accused the organizers of sidelining them and attempting to manipulate the process in favor of a preferred candidate.
One of the leading aspirants, names withheld], expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of the primaries, stating that “the entire process was a sham and a total disregard for democratic values.”
Supporters of another aspirant staged a protest at the APC state secretariat in Awka, demanding the cancellation of the primaries. They accused the election committee sent from Abuja of bias and deliberate exclusion of certain delegates from the voting list.
Meanwhile, a source within the APC National Working Committee (NWC) revealed that the party may consider declaring the exercise inconclusive, pending a review of field reports and complaints from stakeholders.
As of press time, the APC has not officially announced a winner, and tensions remain high among party faithful across the state.
Observers and political analysts have warned that unless the party resolves the crisis promptly and transparently, it risks heading into the November election divided and weakened in a state historically dominated by opposition parties.
