Soludo’s Camp in Confusion as Tinubu backs the APC candidate for Anambra governorship election
The political landscape in Anambra State has taken a dramatic turn following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s open endorsement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, ahead of the November 8, 2025, governorship election.
At the official event endorsing Ukachukwu, President Tinubu declared: “Go and get me Anambra. You have my full support.” The President’s bold statement has since sent shockwaves through the political establishment in the state and left the camp of incumbent Governor Charles Soludo in a state of confusion.
Governor Soludo, who is seeking re-election under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), had been widely praised by Tinubu during a recent visit to the state, where the President commissioned several projects. Many political analysts interpreted Tinubu’s remarks as a subtle nod to Soludo’s performance and a possible sign of support.
However, the APC leadership in the South-East was quick to clarify that the President’s visit was purely official and not a political endorsement.
Further complicating matters, Governor Soludo recently pledged his support for President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, describing APGA and APC as “ideological allies.” This statement has stirred controversy within APGA, with party stakeholders questioning the governor’s political allegiance and the wisdom of such alignment with the ruling party.
Meanwhile, APC’s internal affairs have been anything but smooth. The party’s primary process in Anambra has faced criticism for lack of transparency. One of the key aspirants, Paul Chukwuma, pulled out of the race, citing dissatisfaction with the manner in which the primaries were conducted.
As the November election approaches, both APGA and APC appear to be battling internal contradictions while also gearing up for a fierce political showdown. Soludo’s strategic overtures to the APC at the national level may be calculated, but it has left observers wondering whether he can retain his grassroots support while aligning with a party many in the South-East still view with skepticism.
With President Tinubu now fully backing the APC candidate, and Soludo walking a tightrope between party loyalty and federal alignment, the race for Anambra’s top seat promises to be one of the most intriguing in recent political memory.
