Suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara met with President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the President’s residence in Lagos. Headlineswave.ng learnt that this meeting is part of ongoing efforts to address the political crisis in Rivers State, which led to the declaration of a state of emergency in March 2025

The crisis stems from a prolonged political standoff between Governor Fubara and his estranged political godfather, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. Tensions escalated when state lawmakers, many aligned with Wike, initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara, citing alleged illegal budget presentations and legislative composition issues. Additionally, incidents of pipeline vandalism, including a fire on the Trans Niger Pipeline, contributed to the instability.

In response, President Tinubu declared a six-month state of emergency, suspending Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State Assembly, and appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State .While specific details of the Lagos meeting remain undisclosed, it is widely believed that the discussion focused on reconciliation efforts and the potential restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State. Supporters of Fubara have expressed optimism that the meeting signals a possible resolution to the crisis and a return to normalcy in the state’s political landscape .

This meeting follows a previous encounter between Fubara and President Tinubu in London, indicating ongoing dialogues aimed at resolving the political impasse in Rivers State .
