In a significant political development, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the registration of two new political parties as Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections.

The newly registered parties are:

Independent Democrats (ID)

Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM)

In a statement released earlier today by INEC Secretary, Mrs. A. C. Ogakwu, the commission confirmed that both parties met the constitutional requirements for registration, including the submission and validation of their constitutions, manifestos, logos, and national executive structures.

“This registration brings more voices into the democratic process and widens the political choices available to Nigerians,” the statement noted.

The recognition of ID and PDM comes amid mounting calls for electoral reform and broader participation, especially as public trust in mainstream parties continues to decline.

Political analysts say the emergence of new parties could reshape alliances and voter dynamics, particularly among youths and first-time voters seeking alternatives.

INEC reiterated its commitment to ensuring a level playing field for all registered political parties and emphasized the importance of internal democracy and compliance with electoral laws.

With these additions, Nigeria now boasts over 90 registered political parties, a reminder of the country’s deeply pluralistic political culture.
