In a major political development, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara is set to return to office after months of intense conflict and suspension.
This follows a peace agreement personally brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to end the crisis between Fubara and the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.
While the truce is being celebrated as a breakthrough, Governor Fubara’s return comes with five stringent conditions that will significantly limit his power and future ambitions.
Here are the conditions attached to his reinstatement:
1.No Re-Election in 2027
Governor Fubara has agreed not to contest for a second term after completing his current tenure. This was a critical part of the settlement and signals an early end to his political ambitions beyond 2027.
2.Control of All 23 LGAs to Wike’s Camp
Under the new agreement, all 23 Local Government Area chairmanship positions will be filled by nominees loyal to Wike. This move hands local grassroots power to the former governor’s network, leaving Fubara with limited influence over local governance.
3.Impeachment Threats Dropped
Lawmakers loyal to Wike had initiated impeachment moves against Fubara. As part of the peace deal, they have agreed to withdraw all impeachment proceedings, in exchange for settlement of their pending entitlements and allowances.
4.Reinstatement of Suspended Assembly Leadership
The suspended Speaker and principal officers of the State Assembly are to be reinstated. This aims to end the prolonged legislative crisis that saw parallel factions battling for control.
5.Alignment with Wike’s Political Structure
Fubara is expected to fully cooperate with Wike’s political structure in Rivers State. This includes respecting party decisions on appointments and policies throughout his remaining tenure.
When Will He Return?
Governor Fubara’s formal return is expected by mid-September 2025, after the six-month emergency suspension period comes to an end.
A Fragile Peace
Although both leaders have publicly declared that peace has returned, many observers believe the truce is fragile and conditional. The coming months will test whether this settlement can truly stabilize Rivers State politics.
