A tanker carrying 50,000 litres of diesel lost control and skidded off the road on Wednesday night near Jin-Jofes Filling Station in the Iwo Road area of Ibadan, injuring one person and causing a hazardous fuel spill.

According to the Oyo State Fire Service, the incident occurred at a sharp bend where the tanker veered into a gutter, spilling its highly flammable contents. Fire service personnel were swiftly deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 8:07 p.m.

Mr. Maroof Akinwande, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, said emergency crews, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent Adeniyi Adesina, acted promptly to contain the situation. The team neutralised the diesel spill using chemical foam to prevent potential fire outbreaks.

The truck, a DAF tanker with registration number T17657LA (Lagos), was navigating a curve when the driver reportedly lost control. Both the driver and the motor boy survived the crash, although the latter sustained a shoulder injury and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Security personnel, including officers from the Nigeria Police Force and the Amotekun Corps, quickly intervened to restore traffic flow and secure the area.

Authorities have urged tanker drivers to exercise greater caution when navigating sharp bends, especially when transporting flammable materials.
