The Alara of Ilara, Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, has empowered 300 residents of Epe Division in Lagos State with vocational tools as part of activities marking his fifth coronation anniversary.
Beneficiaries received equipment including sewing machines, grinders, and hair dryers, aimed at promoting self-reliance and reducing dependency within the community. The initiative was spearheaded by the monarch’s wife, Mrs. Bolanle Ogunsanwo, in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency.
Speaking at the event, Oba Ogunsanwo urged beneficiaries to put the tools to good use, stressing that the gesture was designed to create sustainable livelihood opportunities. “My advice is for the beneficiaries to make the best use of the equipment for self-sustenance,” he said.
As part of the celebrations, over 300 residents also benefitted from a free medical outreach facilitated by Prof. John Obafunwa, Director-General of the Nigeria Institute of Medical Research. The programme offered services such as eye tests, provision of eyeglasses, dental care, blood sugar and blood pressure checks, as well as free medication for various ailments.
Obafunwa, who hails from Ilara, explained that the initiative was a way of giving back to his community. “This medical initiative is designed to ensure our people are medically fit,” he said, adding that the exercise began with a community fitness walk.
The medical outreach was widely applauded by beneficiaries. Mrs. Fatimah Agbomeji expressed relief after receiving free eyeglasses for her long-standing eye problem, while Mr. Jamiu Adekoya thanked the organisers after receiving free dental care.
As part of the anniversary activities, Obafunwa is also set to be conferred with the chieftaincy title of Balogun of Ilara Kingdom.
