A late afternoon fire on Thursday gutted a residential building and an adjoining shop at Atake, Adebo Axis of Oja-Oba in Iseyin, Oyo State.
Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Mr. Moroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday in Ibadan. He said the agency received a distress call at about 4:04 p.m. from a resident, Mrs. Adegoke Anifat, before firefighters were deployed to the scene.
On arrival, the team led by ACFS Azeez Muritala met the ancient residential building and shop already engulfed in flames. The personnel, however, quickly curtailed the inferno, preventing it from spreading to other nearby properties.
Although no lives were lost, the fire destroyed property worth millions of naira. Akinwande attributed the incident to a power surge and urged residents to adopt safety measures, including the installation of fire extinguishers in homes and business premises, to mitigate future occurrences.
