The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has voiced grave concern over the demolition of the historic Alaba Rago Market in Lagos, describing the action as a severe blow to businesses and livelihoods.
In a statement released on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Professor T. A. Muhammad-Baba, the Forum lamented that although no casualties were recorded, thousands of traders and families have suffered crushing economic setbacks.
“The demolition has resulted in losses of businesses and property, with disruption to livelihoods and other hardships for thousands of people. Thankfully, no loss of life has been reported,” the statement read.
The ACF extended its sympathies to the victims, commended their resilience, and appealed for calm, assuring them that it is gathering full details of the incident to engage with both the Lagos State Government and the affected community towards a meaningful resolution.
It also appealed to the Lagos State and Federal Governments to provide relief and assistance to traders who have lost their sources of income, stressing that immediate rebuilding support is essential to restoring economic stability.
“Alaba Rago has been a historic landmark in Lagos, and ACF believes it will remain so. In time, the market will regain its vibrancy and prosperity,” the statement added.
The Forum confirmed that efforts were already underway to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the demolition, pledging constructive dialogue to protect the interests of all those impacted.
