ADC Faces Internal Tensions Over Peter Obi’s Presidential Ambition

Emerging cracks have been reported within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following growing agitation over the presidential ambitions of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi.

Investigations by headlineswave.ng reveal that the tension is largely driven by the insistence of Obi’s supporters, popularly known as Obidients, that he must be considered for the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.

Some of these supporters have reportedly threatened to disengage from the ADC should their demand not be met.

Sources within the party disclosed that the development has unsettled several ADC leaders, particularly from the northern part of the country, who are increasingly uncomfortable with what they describe as the “forceful and uncompromising posture” of some Obi loyalists.

As a result, a number of party stakeholders are said to be distancing themselves from Obi’s emerging presidential movement within the party.
Peter Obi formally joined the ADC on December 31, 2025, in Enugu. He is also regarded as a central figure in the opposition coalition that influenced the current configuration of the party.

Reacting to the situation, former ADC National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, downplayed the scale of the crisis, insisting that the unrest is being driven by only a small fraction of Obi’s supporters.

According to him, Obi remains fully committed to party unity and collective national interest rather than personal ambition.
“All the leaders, all critical stakeholders in the party have advised their supporters to unite and build the party first,” Nwosu said.

“I was with Peter Obi yesterday (Friday), and he showed me the minutes of some of the Obidient meetings that he participated in.

He was very emphatic that this is about the country, not an individual.”
Nwosu further suggested that much of the aggressive online commentary attributed to Obi’s supporters does not accurately reflect the position of ADC members nationwide.

He alleged that some of the online groups may be loosely coordinated or even operating with ulterior motives aimed at weakening the party and the broader opposition movement.

While acknowledging that a small number of Obi’s genuine supporters may be acting emotionally, Nwosu stressed that they represent only a minority within the party.

He expressed confidence that the ADC remains united and that the forthcoming primaries would not result in any lasting divisions.

He concluded that internal democratic processes would be allowed to run their course, assuring party members that the ADC leadership remains focused on strengthening the party ahead of future electoral contests.
