Nigeria’s exit from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following their semi-final defeat to host nation Morocco has continued to spark intense debate, with Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea placed at the centre of the controversy surrounding the match officiating.

The high-stakes encounter ended 0–0 after 120 minutes, before Morocco advanced to the final after winning 4–2 on penalties, bringing an end to the Super Eagles’ AFCON campaign.

While Morocco’s defensive discipline and composure in the shootout proved decisive, much of the post-match discussion has focused on the referee’s handling of the game.

Throughout regulation time and extra time, Nigerian players and officials were visibly frustrated by a number of decisions, particularly in situations involving physical challenges and penalty-area incidents.

Appeals from the Super Eagles were repeatedly waved away, with no on-field reviews initiated despite the presence of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Several football analysts and fans questioned the consistency of officiating, noting that similar challenges were judged differently at various points in the match.

Critics also raised concerns over VAR’s limited involvement, arguing that some contentious moments merited closer scrutiny in a semi-final of such magnitude.
Referee Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea, one of Africa’s most experienced officials, came under heavy criticism on social media following the final whistle, as Nigerian supporters expressed dissatisfaction with what they described as uneven officiating.

The debate intensified after replays of certain incidents circulated online, further fuelling calls for clearer and more transparent refereeing standards at the tournament.

Despite the controversy, Morocco held their nerve during the penalty shootout to secure qualification for the AFCON final, while Nigeria were left to reflect on a campaign that promised much but ended in heartbreak.

As the tournament draws to a close, the Nigeria–Morocco semi-final has once again reignited broader conversations about officiating quality, VAR application, and accountability at AFCON, with many observers urging the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to address recurring concerns to protect the credibility of Africa’s flagship football competition.
