Alex Otti Decampment to APC After Visit to Governor Mbah? Here Is What Really Happened
Speculations have been flying across political circles that Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, may have secretly decamped to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following his recent visit to Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah. But fresh findings by Headlineswave.ng reveal that the reports are false and misleading — and that nothing of such has taken place.
How the Rumour Started
The rumours began shortly after photos and videos surfaced online showing Governor Otti in a private meeting with Governor Peter Mbah at the Enugu State Government House. The visit, which was part of Otti’s regional economic and security consultations, quickly sparked social media gossip suggesting that he was preparing to dump the Labour Party (LP) for the ruling APC.
Several political blogs claimed that the meeting was “a strategic move” brokered by powerful APC figures in the South-East to lure Otti into joining their ranks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
What Really Happened During the Visit
However, credible sources within both state governments confirmed that the meeting between the two governors had nothing to do with politics.
According to officials who spoke to Headlineswave.ng, Governor Otti’s visit was strictly focused on inter-state collaboration in areas of security, infrastructure, and trade development between Abia and Enugu States.
An aide to the Abia Governor explained:
“Dr. Otti’s visit to Governor Mbah was purely official. It was about strengthening economic cooperation within the South-East region. There was no political negotiation, no talk of decamping, and no meeting with APC leaders during or after that visit.”
Abia Government Denies Defection
The Abia State Government has since debunked the viral report, describing it as the handiwork of political mischief-makers.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor said:
“Governor Alex Otti remains a proud member of the Labour Party. The fake story of his defection to APC after visiting Enugu is a calculated attempt to distract the government from its people-centered development agenda.”
The government urged the public to disregard the rumour, stressing that Otti’s loyalty to the Labour Party and its progressive ideals remains unwavering.
APC Speaks Out
Meanwhile, the Abia State chapter of the APC has also reacted to the reports, confirming that Governor Otti has not joined their party.
According to the state publicity secretary:
“We are not aware of any move by Governor Otti to defect to APC. No formal or informal discussion has taken place. What people are spreading online is fake news.”
The APC further clarified that while it welcomes new members, it will not be part of any political propaganda aimed at destabilizing another party.
Political Context
Political observers believe that the rumour was deliberately circulated to create confusion in Abia’s political space as 2027 draws near. Governor Otti, who was elected under the Labour Party in 2023, has since maintained a clean distance from partisan distractions, focusing instead on governance and reforms in the state.
Analysts say his growing popularity and developmental strides have made him a target for political attacks and misinformation.
As of now, there is no credible evidence that Governor Alex Otti has decamped to the APC — either after visiting Governor Peter Mbah or at any other time.
The viral claims remain false, unfounded, and politically motivated.
Governor Otti remains a committed member of the Labour Party, focused on rebuilding Abia State through transparency, accountability, and development-driven government
