Asaba to Become Anioma Capital, Warri Named Delta Capital – Akpabio
Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has thrown his weight behind the creation of a proposed Anioma State, revealing that Asaba would serve as its capital if approved.
Akpabio also disclosed that Warri would become the capital of the remaining Delta State following the proposed restructuring.
The Senate President made this known while addressing stakeholders at the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South zonal congress held in Asaba, Delta State.
What Akpabio Said
According to him:
“Anioma State will be created, with Asaba as its capital… Warri will be the capital of the new Delta.”
He explained that Warri is well-positioned to serve as a capital due to its existing infrastructure, including an airport, seaport, and presence of major oil companies.
Push for Anioma State
The proposed Anioma State is expected to be carved out of present-day Delta State, a move that has gained increasing political support.
The proposal is being championed by Senator Ned Nwoko
It has reportedly received backing within the National Assembly
It is part of ongoing discussions around restructuring and development
Akpabio described the agitation as “historically justified”, emphasizing that creating more states could improve governance and bring development closer to the people.
Despite the strong backing, the creation of a new state in Nigeria is a complex constitutional process, requiring the following steps:
National Assembly approval
Endorsement by state assemblies
Presidential assent
This means Anioma State has not yet been created, but remains a proposal gaining momentum.
Akpabio’s statement signals growing political will toward state creation in Nigeria. However, until all constitutional requirements are met, the proposal remains a work in progress rather than a final decision.
