Chimamanda Adichie Sends Powerful Message to Newly Appointed INEC Chairman, Prof. Amupitan
Internationally acclaimed Nigerian author and public intellectual, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has penned a passionate open letter to the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), urging him to uphold integrity and fairness in the nation’s democratic process.
Professor Amupitan, a Professor of Law at the University of Jos and a native of Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, was recently approved by the National Council of State following his nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In her letter, which has since gone viral on social media, Adichie congratulated the new INEC boss but reminded him of the weighty expectations attached to his office.
“Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, the herculean task is now on your shoulders as INEC Chairman Designate,” she wrote. “I know your appointment didn’t come without expectations or agreements to favour your appointor, but I believe that when it’s time for the people to be liberated, nature always handles even the most difficult hindrances.”
She further noted that Nigerians often view such appointments with skepticism but expressed optimism that the collective will of the people can overcome political interference.
“No one will be appointed without the masses doubting their integrity or suspecting an agreement with those in power. But if the people are resolute, conscientious, and stand their ground, not even Seyi Tinubu as INEC Chairman could declare his father winner if he didn’t win,” she stated.
Adichie concluded her letter with a strong moral appeal:
“Prof, you can make it easy for Nigerians by towing the path of integrity, no matter the forces. Congratulations!”
Who Is Chimamanda Adichie — And Why Her Voice Matters
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, one of Africa’s most influential literary voices, is the award-winning author of Half of a Yellow Sun, Americanah, and Purple Hibiscus. Her TED Talk, “We Should All Be Feminists,” has been viewed millions of times and continues to shape global conversations on equality and governance.
Beyond literature, Adichie has become a respected moral voice in Nigerian public discourse — often speaking out on issues of democracy, leadership, and electoral integrity. Her 2023 open letter to the United States government, following Nigeria’s controversial general elections, drew international attention and renewed debate about transparency in the nation’s electoral system.
Her latest message to Professor Amupitan is therefore seen as both a moral reminder and a symbolic call to duty, urging the new INEC Chairman to restore faith in the country’s democratic institutions.
The letter has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians echoing her sentiments and calling for a new era of credibility and fairness in Nigeria’s elections.
