  1. Don’t Drink This Water: Cholera Outbreak Linked to Contaminated Sources in Abuja

Health authorities have raised an urgent alarm over a rapidly spreading cholera outbreak in Abuja, linking the majority of new cases to contaminated water sources across several communities.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, more than 150 suspected cases have been reported in the past two weeks, with at least 12 confirmed deaths. Most of the infections have been traced to untreated wells, roadside water vendors, and unclean storage tanks.

A statement released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Friday warned residents to avoid drinking unboiled water, consuming raw foods washed with unclean water, and buying sachet water from unverified vendors.

“This outbreak is serious. We are working with local authorities to contain the spread, but residents must take immediate precautions,” the NCDC spokesperson said.

Cholera, a potentially life-threatening disease, spreads through contaminated food and water. Symptoms include severe diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration, which can quickly become fatal if not treated.

How to Protect Yourself

Boil water before drinking or cooking.

Wash hands frequently with soap.

Avoid raw foods unless you can confirm they were cleaned with safe water.

Report symptoms to the nearest health facility immediately.
