The Ebonyi State Police Command has announced a significant victory in its campaign against violent crime, confirming the death of a notorious gang leader during a clearance operation in Ishielu Local Government Area.
On 29 August 2025, operatives of the Command’s Crack Squad, acting on what authorities described as “credible intelligence,” raided a criminal hideout in Iyonu Forest, Ishielu LGA. The raid sparked a prolonged gunfight with armed gang members.
According to police reports, the officers overpowered the attackers in a sustained exchange of gunfire. The gang’s ringleader, Isaiah Okoronkwo, who had long been on the police wanted list, was shot dead during the confrontation. Two AK-47 rifles were recovered from the scene.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Commissioner of Police Adaku Uche-Anya, through the Command’s spokesperson, Superintendent Joshua Ukandu, commended the operatives for their bravery and intelligence-driven action.
“The operatives displayed professionalism, courage, and painstaking intelligence work that led to this success,” she stated.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to public safety, pledging that officers would intensify efforts to dismantle criminal networks across Ebonyi. “The Command remains resolute in its mandate to protect lives and property and will continue to take down criminal syndicates wherever they operate,” she added.
