Presidency reaffirms commitment to enforcing mandatory NIN regulations

By Matthew Denis

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured Nigerians that his administration is committed to enforcing mandatory regulations for the National Identity Number (NIN) to ensure the proper identification and security of citizens.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, at the National Day of Identity 2025 in Abuja, the President explained that effective regulation of the NIN will assist in bridging security gaps in the country.

He said: “My administration remains fully committed to enforcing the Mandatory Use Regulation for the NIN. This commitment is not just about compliance. It is about securing our nation, strengthening our economy, and ensuring that every Nigerian can participate fully in the digital era.

“Nigeria has already positioned itself as a signatory to global commitments on Digital Public Infrastructure. We must therefore ensure that our identity systems, secured by PKI, are trusted both at home and abroad. This is how we build confidence in our systems, attract investment, and ensure that our citizens are able to engage seamlessly in a globalised digital economy.

“As President, I reaffirm my administration’s commitment to this cause. But government cannot do it alone. Achieving a truly robust identity ecosystem requires collaboration. We must deepen harmonisation across agencies, strengthen partnerships with the private sector, and expand cooperation with international partners. Together, we can ensure that identity serves as a bridge to opportunity and not as a barrier.”

The President tasked stakeholders and citizens to join hands with the government in ensuring proper identification as provided by relevant agencies.

He added that the expansion has also reached beyond Nigeria’s borders.
