Peter Obi back with Abure – LP legal adviser Kehinde Edun

The legal adviser of the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party, Kehinde Edun, has alleged that Mr Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate, is now back and working with the embattled national chairman.
Edun stated this while fielding questions on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Wednesday.
“I believe so. He hasn’t made any categorical statement about that. He hasn’t said he has left the party.
“Yes, he’s with us, and I believe he’s speaking with Abure. That’s what I know and believe,” he said when asked if Peter Obi is now back with Abure.
Headlineswave recalls that the Labour Party (LP) in Nigeria has experienced internal disputes concerning its leadership, particularly involving Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and Julius Abure, the National Chairman. In September 2024, a faction within the party, supported by Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, appointed former Minister of Finance Nenadi Usman as the acting leader, aiming to replace Abure.
This move was contested, and subsequent rulings by both the High Court and the Court of Appeal affirmed Julius Abure as the legitimate National Chairman of the Labour Party.

Following these legal decisions, Kehinde Edun, the LP’s legal adviser, stated that Peter Obi continues to engage with the Abure-led leadership and has not indicated any intention to leave the party. Edun emphasized efforts to reconcile internal differences and strengthen party unity.
Julius Abure has expressed openness to resolving disagreements with Peter Obi and Governor Otti, describing the disputes as a “family affair” that should be settled amicably. He underscored the importance of unity within the party to advance its objectives for Nigeria.
Peter Obi has also called for peace and unity within the Labour Party, urging members to focus on the party’s mission to improve the lives of Nigerians and not be distracted by internal leadership issues.
In summary, while there have been internal leadership challenges within the Labour Party, key figures like Peter Obi and Julius Abure are actively seeking reconciliation to strengthen the party’s cohesion and effectiveness.
