Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Friday, received Hassana and Husaina Isa, the conjoined twins who were successfully separated after a complex surgery in Saudi Arabia.
The twins, who were born on October 30, 2023, conjoined at the lower abdomen, pelvis, and spine, underwent a life-saving operation at the King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in Riyadh.
The delicate surgery, which lasted for about 14 hours and unfolded in nine stages, was carried out by a team of thirty-eight consultants and specialists, including paediatric surgeons, neurosurgeons, orthopaedic doctors, urologists, anaesthetists, and plastic surgeons.
The intervention was fully funded by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud.
Press attaché at the Royal Embassy in Abuja, Mohammad Alsahabi, explained that the medical team had spent months conducting comprehensive examinations and detailed planning before embarking on the procedure.
He said the successful operation was one of the most complex cases handled under the Saudi Siamese Twins Separation Programme, which has carried out sixty-five successful separations and managed one hundred and fifty cases from twenty-five countries over the last thirty-five years.
The Consular General of Saudi Arabia in Kano, Khalil Ahmed Al-Admawi, who was present at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport to welcome the family, described the operation as evidence of the Kingdom’s commitment to humanitarian service.
He added that Saudi Arabia would continue to provide medical assistance through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, particularly to Nigeria, with which it shares longstanding ties.
The father of the twins, Mr Hassan Isa, expressed deep gratitude to King Salman for the financial and welfare support provided to his family throughout their two-year stay in Riyadh.
He said the family was also privileged to perform the annual pilgrimage during their time in the Kingdom.
Governor Yusuf, overwhelmed with joy, applauded the humanitarian gesture of King Salman and the Crown Prince, pledging that the Kano State Government would take full responsibility for the education and medical care of Hassana and Husaina.
